You can get started before this training, but we ask that you do attend it.
BETH KELLY, SHELTER VOLUNTEER
Recorded and Edited in 2015 by Maxwell Goldsmith--Shelter Support Staff.
The first step in connecting with us is to attend one of our monthly volunteer trainings that are held the second Saturday of each month. Our January training will be held at the Community Care Center.
After attending a training:
We have volunteer opportunities at two locations; our Nightly Shelter and the Community Care Center, our new hygiene center and social service hub. Ideally volunteers commit to a weekly, bi-monthly or monthly, ongoing shift.
We have many regular openings for volunteers at our Nightly Shelter in the evening hours between 5-10 pm and the mornings between 6-8 am.
Community Care Center
We have openings at the Community Care Center Sunday — Friday, 10 am - 5 pm.
What Volunteers Do
Our volunteers primarily support our staff, assist with guests needs, cleaning, laundry, making coffee, organizing, occasionally running errands, and being available to meet our guests and get to know them.
Additionally, we have volunteers, (families, church groups, community groups, etc.) bring in hot meals to our Nightly Shelter in the evenings. We do not have cooking facilities, so all meals that are brought in must be in a crockpot, casserole dish or a container that can be packed in/packed out. Our guests love high-quality meat, fresh veggies, fresh fruit, and delicious drinks. We find that cooking for 40 is generally the sweet spot. Please bring paper plates and utensils if possible.
Making food for the Community Care Center is a large undertaking and we ask that you contact us directly to talk through what that might look like.
