I am writing today to announce a very special donation we recently received from the trust of a beautiful member of our community who recently passed away. Scott Busk's Lighthouse Trust has given Interfaith Works $13,000 in support of the Emergency Overnight Shelter and we couldn't be more appreciative.
"Lighthouse Trust was created as the last wish of a local person named Scott Busk, a humble electrician who helped many low-income people during his life. He also saved a considerable amount of money throughout his long career in the construction trades. Scott grew up in poverty and wanted a portion of his estate to help impoverished and homeless people. Scott was also deeply effected by his son's homelessness, which was likely caused by the mental health challenges his son continues to live with. All of these experiences inspired Scott to document his best wishes through his last will and testament. Lighthouse Trust was created as a charitable trust intended to carry out Scott's wishes."
We are honored to be a part of Scott's legacy and are so inspired by his love for the community. Many of our guests are living with significant and persistent mental health challenges that are in large part the cause of their homelessness. Our guests have fallen through nearly every crack because their challenges are so great. For many, our shelter is the first place they have been welcomed into for many years.
Thank you Scott for seeing the importance of supporting those among us that are in such significant pain, at times being tortured by uncontrollable symptoms, and all the while enduring the incredibly damaging and pervasive stigma that our society holds against those living with mental illness. Thank you to those entrusted with Scott's will for believing in our mission and recognizing that our program is a necessary and positive part of this community. We are honored, humbled and overwhelmed with the beauty that swirls throughout our community. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
